about our jewelry

Earrings Are Hypoallergenic

Earrings Are Hypoallergenic

Earrings Are Hypoallergenic

Not all our earrings are constructed with sterling silver (if they are, the description will say so), but the earhook is always sterling silver to ensure that it is hypoallergenic. If you are particularly sensitive and even sterling will not suffice, we can install niobium earwires, if the earwire is not a design feature of the peace itself. If in doubt, contact us about a piece you have in your card to make sure it meets your allergy-based requirements.

Oxidized Silver

Many of our pieces benefit from the additional style element of oxidized silver. Often this is the clasp on a bracelet or a silver component of a piece.. Oxidized silver means that the item has at least a 92.5% silver component. It is the result of  a chemical treatment that gives the piece a dark, sometimes blue-ish tint. When selectively polished, oxidation can add intricate designs to a piece. It also makes it very low-maintenance.

Kinds of Bracelets

You will have noticed that our site offers three kinds of bracelets: Strung bracelets with some kind of closure (listed as "Bracelets"), Stretch Bracelets that roll on and off over the wearer's hand, and Memory Wire Bracelets, which keep their shape but are flexible and usually wrap around the wrist two or three times. Strung Bracelets and Memory Wire Bracelets, if handled with care, can last indefinitely. Stretch Bracelets have a more limited life expectancy, due to even the best stretch materials weakening over time.

Jewelry can be constructed of just about any material, and I find the many materials one can incorporate in jewelry design very exciting. The only limit on the pieces one can create is the imagination of the designer. While we search for interesting pieces everywhere, we are scrupulous in obtaining only responsibly sourced supplies. If the source of a component is in question, we will not purchase it. We also seek to purchase from minority, LGBTQIA+ and women-owned businesses whenever possible.

Our Story

It all began as a fluke.

I was shopping for some sewing supplies at Joann Fabrics near Southpark Mall in Moline one day in late fall of 2018. The store was full of shoppers stocking up on supplies for making Christmas decorations and gifts, not my favorite situation. I needed just one specific item and was trying to cut through aisles quickly, but wherever I turned, there were shoppers browsing. The aisles were not very wide, and I didn’t want to cause disruption to others by coming through. So I popped from one aisle to the next and found one that was clear. I started walking through and, looking around me, found that I liked what I saw. It was the beading aisle.

That day, I bought a few beads and supplies, planning to make just an item or two as gifts. But once I started, I soon wanted to make more. I started taking classes and watching tutorials, experimenting with various designs and materials, and the rest -as they say- is history. I love the versatility of jewelry design, the fact that just about anything can be incorporated into a piece, including a variety of styles and so many fabulous colors. Trips to Beadology* in Iowa City (https://beadologyiowa.com/) for high-quality beads and supplies and in-person classes, many hours watching video tutorials, especially those of Jill Wiseman (https://jillwisemandesigns.com/), and acquiring a library of excellent jewelry design books followed.

By now, I have outgrown some of my early sources but keep finding new ones, often in unexpected places online and in the physical world. Experimenting with new designs gives me great joy and I hope that some of them will appeal to you too and perhaps become a treasured element of your own style.
